We Are FAMILY!
We Are FAMILY!
A Family of wines that bring families together.
“Wine to me is passion. It’s family and friends. It's the warmth of heart and generosity of spirit.” Robert Mondavi (1999).
Cavavin wines are the embodiment of family - a family of winegrowers and winemakers, since their conception 35 years ago. These wine families are authentic and have been passionate about wine for generations.
Cavavin is a large family network that endeavours to unite wine merchants, winemakers, and the consumer. It is a company that focuses on family continuity within the group. It was founded by Michel Bourel in 1985 and today’s General Manager is Olivier Mermuys, the founder’s son-in-law. It is the leading wine shop in France and the ambassador of ‘The French Art de Vivre’.
It is Cavavin Ireland’s ambition that you get to experience joy at the dinner table with our fantastic range of wine styles and authentic selections with accompanying artisan Sheridan’s cheese and meats, Limerick's Eleven14 coffee and artisan locally produced nibbles and chocolates to finish. We are proud to have so many families of wines to offer you in-store and online. Here are just a few of our favourites.
(The Genealogy of Wine)
France - the Mourat Family
The Mourat name creates cosmopolitan wines from a cosmopolitan vineyard. The Mourat name is synonymous with wine for generations. The family started out as winegrowers and saltgrowers until the late 19th Century, then for three generations the family was synonymous with wine merchants.
In 1974, Jean created and crafted the vineyard that is today, the proud home of Chateau Marie du Fou.
In 1998, son Jérémie joined and accelerated the adventure by establishing two estates - Clos Saint André in 2006 and Moulin Blanc in 2011. For more than 10 years the estates have gone into organic farming or organic conversion.
Mourat’s white wine grape varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. The main red wine grapes are Pinot Noir, Gamay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. Mourat wines see a marriage of traditional Loire Valley grapes with non-traditional grape varieties from South-West France. Not your typical wine marriages but, in my opinion, they are the perfect match!
At Cavavin Ireland, we have a number of Mourat wine styles for you to explore and discover:

The Lebanon - Chateau Musar
In 1930, at just 20 years old, Gaston Hochar (pronounced Hoshar) founded Chateau Musar. His inspiration was Lebanon’s 6,000-year winemaking tradition and his travels in Bordeaux. Would you believe, there is an Irish link with this story as Major Ronald Barton (an old family of Ireland from the 18th Century), of Château Langoa-Barton, was stationed in Lebanon during World War II and became a great friend, strengthening the links between Chateau Musar and Bordeaux (and Ireland) that remain to this day.
In 1959, Gaston’s son Serge became the chief winemaker. Today, son’s Mark and Gaston take care of day-to-day operations of the winery and Tarek Sakr is chief winemaker. It's been a family affair since 1930 and its roots continue strong today despite war (1975-1990) and political strife.
Winemaker Tarek Sakr says that “when you drink Musar, it's so much more than wine, it's people's lives. It’s also organic and truly wonderful.”
At Cavavin Ireland, we currently have two red styles available for you to explore and discover:
